Formed from the Town of Amherst on March 22, 1839, the name Cheektowaga comes from the Erie-Seneca Indian word, Ji-ik-do-wah-gah, or "land of the crabapple tree." Cheektowaga was originally a thriving rural town but was extensively developed for suburban housing in the 1950s. Today Cheektowaga is the second-largest suburb in Buffalo and is home to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, the Walden Galleria Mall and so much more.
